This is Jack. He is a 6 year old black Labrador Retriever. He came to the Animal Hospital very off form, lethargic and not eating. This was very unusual for Jack, as he was normally a very active dog that loved his food!

Initial tests could not tell us what was happening with Jack. We had to place him on a drip as he started to be sick , lose weight and become very dehydrated. Eventually as Jack was getting no better with medication, it was decided it was best to get an xray and see if there was any tumours or obstructions present.

On this xray, we could see a suspicious area, but again it was unclear exactly what this could be. It was decided to bring Jack in for a general aneasthetic and have a look. We were amazed to find a very large bouncing rubber ball stuck in the duodenum (which is a short portion of the small intestine connecting it to the stomach). No wonder he wasnt feeling very well!!

Jack remained in a critical condition at The Animal Hospital for several days after the surgery. With great care and attention from all the nurses, he eventually went home and was slowly reintroduced back to his normal diet (without the ball!!).

We are proud to say he is doing great and we hope to never see him again for any simular problems. We hope he has learnt his lesson! He is our August Pet of the Month.

Kevin was found 2 weeks ago by a lovely woman who noticed that he was only able to walk on 3 of his legs. He was brought to The Animal Hospital to be looked after. Kevin, as he was later named by the nurses, was sedated and xrayed. We found an old bad fracture on his right hind. The injury was so bad that amputation was the only option for Kevin.

With the help of Cats Aid funding his care, as Kevin had no owners, his surgery was performed the following day. He recovered well after his operation and one of the nurses has been fostering him for the last 2 weeks while he adjusted to his amputation. Kevin had his stitches removed yesterday and is now ready for his new home.

He is very playful, loving and affectionate, but also mischievous! He copes well with his disability. He is already neutered and has started his vaccination course. He is a young male cat, approx 1 year old. He is also up to date with worming and has been given flea prevention measure. We are ideally looking for an experienced cat owner, who will understand his condition and care for him all his life. Cats cope really well with only 3 limbs and there is never usually any extra cost involved in having a cat with this issue.

If you think you would be able to give Kevin a new start in life, please contact us on 01-4515930 to arrange to meet him.

Shelly is a 1 year old female cat that was brought into The Animal Hospital with a severe eye trauma. She had to have a sedation so we could examine the eye as it was very painful. On closer examination, we found a pellet shot above her eye. The eye itself had been damaged from the impact of the shot. Despite the painful nature of her injuries Shelly is a beautiful and very affectionate cat. She has quickly won the hearts of all the nurses. She has been awarded February pet of the month. When Shelly has recovered she will be needing a new home that will love her and take care of her. She may eventually lose the eye but she will manage very well with only the one. If you are interested in coming to meet her, please phone the clinic on 4515930.

Tilly is a 4 month old Jack Russel puppy. On Saturday, Tilly gave her owners an awful fright. She arrived home from work to find that she had chewed through a wire at the fridge and gave her self terrible mouth burns as well as electrocution. She was in severe shock and this could have been fatal for Tilly. She was quickly brought to the vets and nurse of The Animal Hospital. She was placed on fluid therapy and oxygen quickly. Her temperature was so low that we had to get her warmed up as soon as possible. After a stay in the emergency hospital, Tilly was sent home and was doing much better. She will be on medications for her burns but otherwise she had a lucky escape from an almost always fatal action.

Its very important to secure all wires away from a puppies reach as puppies will chew on anything they can get their teeth into. Hopefully, she has learnt her lesson and will stay well clear in the future!!
