Gizmo

GIZMO – 10 month old Jack Russel Terrier. Gizmo was hit by a car last week and has terrible injuries to his leg. He is very lucky that none of his bones were broken, however the wounds will require constant veterinary attention over the next month and Gizmo has been a very good patient.

Buddy - Febuary Pet of the Month

This is Buddy. He is fast approaching his 14th birthday. He has been a patient of The Animal Hospital for his whole life. Buddy has an ongoing heart condition, common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and has been on medication for many years. We hope to see him popping in for visits for many years to come.

Angelina (Angel) is looking for a forever home! Unfortunately, she had to be surrendered to us as her previous owner was allergic to her. She will be starting her vaccinations this week and will be checked over by one of our Vets! She would love a new home, not just for Christmas but for her whole playful life Please contact the surgery for more details or if you would like to arrange to come and meet her!

A huge thank you to everyone who came to our Christmas Mince Pie night on Tuesday, it was a great success and thanks for all the lovely gifts and cards. They were much appreciated!

HONEY

 This is the incredible story of how Honey, (above) fell from a cliff and lived to see another day! While on holiday in Co.Kerry during the Halloween bank holiday weekend, Honeys owners decided to go for a nice walk along the Ballybunion cliffs for some fresh air. Enjoying her freedom a little too much Honey decided to slide down the cliffside and fell onto the roof of a coastguard station which was located within the cliff and again fell about 6m from there to below.

When her owners eventually located her, she was unable to stand, in severe shock and some blood was seen from her mouth. They feared the worst for Honey. Immediatly they began to search for an open veterinary clinic. Eventually they found one in Tralee which was about a 25 minute drive from their current location. Carefully they placed Honey in the car and made the journey.

Upon arrival Honey was given strong pain killers to make her more comfortable and admitted to the hospital for some xrays. She had broken both her front wrists. Both limbs were placed in plaster of Paris. When Honey came back to Dublin we seen her for her aftercare She was coping really well but was under strict rest and was getting pain relief.

We repeated the xrays after a few weeks and the plaster was removed and replaced by support bandages (see below)as the fracture on one side was doing great and the other side was improving but not quite healed yet.

Honey is a great patient and has been awarded December Pet of the Month by the staff at The Animal Hospital. We will be seeing her again at the end of next week, when if all is well we will remove her bandages and she can begin to build up her exercise levels again.

Duke is a male kitten and is aged between 8-9 weeks old.

He started his vaccinations today and has been wormed.

He has had a full check over with the vet.

Orignally found walking around the square car park and across busy roads, he was brought into us a very shy and nervous kitten.

He is slowly becoming more trusting and affectionate here with the staff, and now purrs when given attention. We have had him one week.

He will need a new owner that won’t rush his love and has the time to spend to get to know him.

Eileen and Pincers

 Pincers arrived into us on the 16th of November in a collapsed state. He had a very swollen bladder caused by a blocked urethra. He was unable to urinate. As a result, there was a lot of back pressure on his kidneys and they were not filtering waste products properly.

Pincers was admitted into our hospital given an anesthetic and a urinary catheter was placed into his bladder so he was finally able to urinate, what a relief!!

Pincers has been with us since then and will be going home on Friday the 24th of November.

A blocked urethra and a resulting swollen bladder is an emergency and can be fatal if left untreated. It usually occurs only in male cats. Exact cause is not known but it is suggested that male cats fed only on dry food are more prone to the condition.

Scooby ( pictured with our nurses Lisa and Pamela) had an operation for pyometra.Pyometra is a serious womb infection. It is very common in unneutered bitches that have not had a litter. Usually occurs weeks after last heat and a vaginal discharge is commonly seen. Common signs to look out for are excessive drinking and urination and bitch is very sick… Treatment is usually an operation to remove the infected uterus. In Scoobys case it has been successful. This operation in an old dog has a very high anaesthetic risk….
